A 12-week internship for a highly motivated individual looking to gain experience in database management, data reporting, and analysis with Dream Corps, a social justice organization closing prison doors and opening doors of opportunity to an equitable, green future. We bring people together across racial, social, and partisan lines to create a future with freedom and dignity for all. Dream Corps’ three programs are JUSTICE, TECH, and GREEN For All.


Program Details:

We are seeking an Engagement & Database Intern for the Fall/Winter of 2021. The intern will work with our Senior Digital & Email Manager, and campaign/organizing staff from Dream Corps’ programs to help manage, analyse and report on our email program using ActionKit, a customer relationship management program (CRM) all in support of our larger goal of:

  • Keeping people out of prison, improving prison conditions, and bringing people home
  • Building an equitable, green economy by fostering common ground on climate change
  • Diversifying and adding justice to the tech sector for Black and Brown communities

Intern Responsibilities:

Our Engagement & Database Intern will: 

  • Learn how to manage an email program using ActionKit (AK), a customer relationship management program (CRM)
  • Learn our email tagging system and help to improve it
  • Improve our tagging taxonomy
  • Help to build performance reports on our email program that will be shared with the wider organization
  • Help track email performance by creating reports (using AK and SQL) that the email team will use to inform their future decisions 
  • Help create standardization protocols across all AK systems 
  • Review our AK tagging system as well as our mailings, pages and reports to ensure they align with our newly created standardizations and make the proper updates 
  • Help create a standardization Wiki for our Action Kit systems that will be shared with the entire organization and will serve as a “how-to” guide

The role will have an actual effect on the performance of our email program and the decisions we make going forward. 

Our headquarters are in Oakland, California. The Engagement & Database Intern is NOT required to live in the Bay Area; however, should a Bay Area resident be selected, they are welcome to come into the office on a basis to be agreed upon with their manager. We follow CDC guidelines and will adjust our protocols depending on current or changing conditions. If you have any questions, please let us know.

The Engagement & Database Intern Job Description:

  • Support the Senior Digital & Email Manager in ongoing email and CRM priorities 
  • Assist in Fall/Winter email campaigns, reporting and CRM standardization program
  • Proactively monitor email and engagement data and create reports
  • Use our database to build queries using SQL that will be used to report on and analyze data
  • Get familiarized with Dream Corps’ primary CRM
  • Create, update and revise any database administration related documentation
  • Stay current with analytics trends and suggest improvements to our data management systems


  • Excellent communication skills / high emotional intelligence
  • 1-2 years working in a team-oriented business/organization
  • Basic understanding of HTML 
  • Beginner - intermediate level data skills: SQL 
  • Solutions oriented - you have a hunger to dive deep into data, find inconsistencies or opportunities and propose solutions
  • A personal history of engaging in changemaking/service work, in a volunteer or professional capacity
  • The ability to seek out help when necessary (all questions are welcome); Willingness to “fail fast” and learn from missteps
  • Writing competency: the ability to submit written copy with minimal need for edits OR to quickly learn what goes into excellent copywriting
  • Strong desire to make change across one or all of the systems that Dream Corps works across

Nice to Have : 

You are currently enrolled in a degree program such as Computer Science, Management Information System (MIS) or another data/technology course of study and/or have a beyond-beginner knowledge of SQL and are is interested in — and able to — jump into an existing database with dozens of key tables to run, modify, and create queries with joins and multi-part nested queries. 


To ensure their personal financial situations are not a barrier to participation and to compensate them for the value of their work, Interns will receive stipends for their 12 weeks at Dream Corps. 

They will be paid at $15/hour for 20-30 hours/week (number of hours per week negotiated upon offer) on a bi-weekly basis. Hours are flexible as this intern will support a bi-coastal team. However, you will be required to be present for weekly team meetings on Wednesdays (9AM PT/12PM ET) and report to work at least two days in a row Monday - Friday. There may be limited evening and weekend work in advance of major programming or in response to current events.
